A Nearly Perfect Crime has been inspired by the story of the Chocolate Cream Killer: Christiana Edmunds who carried out a series of poisonings in Brighton during the early 1870s. Edmunds' purchased chocolates from a local shop and laced them with strychnine (a mortal poison) before returning them to be sold to unsuspecting members of the public. She killed a lot of people and then spent the rest of her life at the Asylum in Brighton dying there in 1907.
